With no Premier League or Championship football this weekend I’ll be focussing on the World Cup qualifiers and the lower leagues of English football.  I can’t wait for Ireland’s tie with France, so we might as well start there.

The French public are fairly unhappy with national side boss Raymond Domenech at the moment, they’re disappointed by a couple of recent results and the fact they have to play a qualifier at all.  In contrast the Irish are really up for this and I reckon they might just take the advantage in their first leg on home soil.  I’ll be honest, this tip is basically a major ‘hunch’ and a belief that the Irish are more fired up for this tie – but at 9/4 I think they’re worth a small wager.  Another decent World Cup pick is Russia to beat Slovenia at home, this one should be nailed on and at 4/11 it isn’t the best value but the Russians should run out comfortable winners.

In a slightly less glamorous tie Carlisle travel Bristol Rovers in League One and the home side should take all three points in this one.  Carlisle are draw specialists on the road, but Bristol really go for it at home and I think they’ll prove a bit too strong for the visitors.  At 11/10 the odds on the Bristol win look pretty good for me and worth a nibble.

My final picks come from League Two, where I think I’ve picked out a few decent options.  Shrewsbury, who are excellent at home, welcome Torquay to the New Meadow and I can only see the home side winning this.  The Shrews have won four and drawn one at home, losing twice, while Torquay have won just once on their travels.  At 10/11 Shrewsbury are worth some serious consideration.  Strugglers Grimsby travel to Northampton and again I reckon the home side will take all three points, Grimsby’s away record is diabolical and Northampton isn’t the easiest place to go and I can only see the home win.  Northampton are available at 8/11and they should be strong enough to see off Grimsby.
