The Premier League relegation battle

With so many games postponed due to the pretty extreme weather we’ve had in the UK over the past two weeks I’ve been unable to update my betting blog as often as I’d like. I’ll be back before the weekend with some tips ahead of the action but I thought I’d offer my thought on some decent bets for the course of the season, with the relegation battle heating up nicely.
As the league is so close the odds are perhaps a little inflated on some teams chances of survival. One team I feel for at the moment is Burnley, who have just lost boss Owen Coyle. I understand Coyle’s decision to leave but the timing has been about as bad as it could possibly be for the Clarets. The Lancashire side haven’t won in nine and they seem to be tiring after their tremendous start to the season. In truth I don’t think their squad is up to Premier League football and I think they’re a pretty good shout for relegation. Former Sheffield Wednesday boss Brian Laws has just taken charge and he may well prove to be a shrewd appointment in time, but I’m not convinced he will be able to prevent the slide this season. The Clarets are currently priced at 10/11 to go down and at just under even money this could be as high as these odds get from now on in.
I also fancy Hull to go down this season but they’re heavy odds-on to drop down the Championship at the moment and their odds may just improve. They’re currently priced around 5/8 but if they pull out of the bottom three those odds will probably increase and it may be worthwhile holding fire before backing the Tigers to go down.
On a final note to end these betting tips Jermaine Defoe looks a good shout for top English goalscorer. The Spurs striker currently has 14 goals, making him the joint top English goalscorer with Wayne Rooney. Don’t get me wrong, I reckon Rooney is the better overall player but Defoe is more consistent at finding the net and he’s gunning for a spot in the World Cup squad after missing out in 2006. Rooney is the favourite with the bookmakers at 11/8, but Defoe is a very attractive 2/1 and worth a nibble in my opinion.
The weather conditions haven’t just been ruining the football, they’ve been hitting the Rugby and the UK & Irish racing schedule has been decimated by the freezing conditions. Hopefully things will thaw out a bit by Saturday so I’ll be back later in the week with my regular betting tips and picks.

Don’t feel for the Dingles! Do feel for those on the continent who aren’t allowed to gamble on EPL matchs – check out http://www.right2bet.net for examples and to sign a petition in support of liberalisation!

Thanks for publishing about this. There’s a heap of solid tech info on the internet. You’ve got a lot of that info here on your web site. I’m impressed – I try to keep a couple blogs somewhat up-to-date, but it’s a struggle sometimes. You’ve done a big job with this one. How do you do it?
